Virtual friends, online chatrooms and online dating is popular
internationally in many countries. These published survey results are from a
U.S. University Study (UV) of mostly American students. However, virtual
friends are also very popular as far as percentage of time spent involving
online-friends in Southeast Asia (seemingly more so than North America &
USA) - in particular nations of Japan, Malaysia & Singapore. Plus, Korea,
Hong Kong, Taiwan & China are rapidly increasing online-usage and virtual
friendship.

As far as religion of internet-virtual friends go, they range widely,
including Christianiaty & Judaism - mostly in the U.S. (U.S. Protestants,
Catholics & Jews participated more in this American University
virtual-research). Plus, Shinto, Buddhism, Daoist, Confucianism, Taoism &
Hinduism thruout popular virtual friends areas of The Far East & Asia.
A study on web-use by UV student counselling services, reveals young people
are complementing their real-world life with the Web to the point where reality
and virtual reality seem one in the same.
This generation is the first to grow-up with the Web and Internet. As a
result The-Web is redefining communities and how people relate to one another
and how they connect, especially personal level electronic communications.
UV's Freshmen Psychology students took part in a study by completing a 120
question online-web survey. It asked how UV students how they feel and act
socially, their bonds with family, sexual practices, and interest in virtual
friend relationships and sex on the Web.
The majority of young people surveyed said they use the-web to stay
connected with virtual friends and with their real-life real-world friends and
family too. The survey also revealed some interesting things about men and
women with online virtual friends.
Young people who had a high potential to become addicted to the Web thought
they had less overall social support from their families and friends and were
unhappy with their ability to resolve real-life conditions and events. As
expected, they said they received a high level of social support from online
virtual friend contacts.
Almost 1 of 3 virtual users have online virtual friends who they have never
met in person, and spend an average of 1-hr a week chatting. Almost 2/3
communicate with their virtual-online friends at least once a week and 40% talk
daily.
Early results reveal more than 80 percent of the 700 plus survey respondents
use the Web heavily and often to maintain relationships with family and
friends. 90% use it to keep up with local friends and 94 per cent use it to
stay in touch with non-local virtual friends.
Results also show a high number of those surveyed (40%) had surfed-the-web
for sexual entertainment. Their online search for such information began at a
young age, many by age 14, and younger! The virtual-use survey also revealed
12% had tried online-dating services, 85% had received pornography, and 40% had
forwarded porno material to virtual friends. The web-survey also showed a
relationship between both numbers of off-line & online-sexual partners.
About 1/3 of online-internet-friends do not know each other in-person, only
thru their computers, electronically - it's possible they may be friends with a
risky person, even a criminal - so they need to use caution, especially if
their virtual friend seems too personal or sexually orientated, and wants to
meet in-person!
While 66% of respondents said general use of the Web assisted them bettering
social contacts and friend networks, only 14% strongly identified with the
web-connection. A minority 37% agreed web-usage had increased their general
sense of community involvement.
Unfortunately, postgraduate studies disclose online-sex can even become an
addiction but much more common and widespread than real sex, both of which can
be adverse for many, for online virtual friend addicts in particular!
